CUPPS entering ‘live’ operational testing

The CUPPS (Common Use Passenger Processing Systems) initiative is moving into a very important stage, in which it will be fully tested in ‘live’ operation. The airports confirmed to participate in the trial are Las Vegas McCarran with ARINC the vendor partner, Orlando (SITA), Sacramento (Air IT), Dublin (RESA) and Brussels (Ultra Electronics). Lufthansa, SAS and American Airlines are the confirmed air carrier participants, with others anticipated to be adding into the test. Ross Falconer reports.

Mobile Check-In is expected to become one of the key early applications to take advantage of the increased shift in mobile usage towards data-services. IBM forecasts that within the next three to five years Mobile Check-In will overtake both kiosks and the web to become the most dominant method for travellers to check-in for their flights. SAS Scandinavian Airlines has established a number of record-breaking innovations, ranging from being the first airline to introduce inflight entertainment to offering separate check-in lounges. plus introducing sleeper seats and flying directly over the North Pole. More recently, a novel fingerprint-based biometric security solution used by SAS and provided by Precise Solutions has been implemented on domestic flights.

While Canadian airports allow self-tagging for domestic flights only, and the US is still looking into implanting self-tagging services, Aéroports de Montréal has pushed ahead, installing more than 70 self-service kiosks, which also facilitate self-tagging.
